[It feels like arguing it would just be worse. So, instead, he says,] We both have apologies to give, I guess. When do you wanna...?

Um, when do you want to? [Dirk says he's feeling better but he would hate to push him.]

[splinten]

Whenever you're okay with it. It isn't like I have a busy schedule here.

[potentite]

O—Okay, yes, certainly.

[Shit he wants to run now. The whole reason he wanted Dirk to pick was so he couldn't run from it, so he couldn't put it off, but it turns out his instinct to run comes anyway.]

[splinten]

Um. Are you sure?

[He doesn't look sure.]

[potentite]

[He nods quickly.] Yes, it's fine.

[A pause.]

We're dead ends, huh. That ain't the point, I know. But it's what we are.

[He rubs the back of his neck.]

Well, I can't say for sure, um, especially for you but I am pretty sure I was a goner. Certainly felt like dying.

[splinten]

I'm sorry I failed you.

You're not hurt now, are you?

[potentite]

You didn't fail me. But, um...

[He shifts a bit. God, he doesn't want to worry Dirk. Dirk shouldn't have to worry over him.]

I'm mostly fine!

[splinten]

What's wrong? [He pushes himself to his feet.] Where are you hurt?

[potentite]

[Jake, however, just glances away and clears his throat, staying seated.]

It's all right. It should be fine. We don't know what happened to you back there, so um, you should probably take a load off for a bit longer.

[splinten]

Jake, it's not fine, you're hurt.

[potentite]

[Guilty, he sighs before standing. Now that he isn't trying to hide it, his movements are slower.]

If I show you will you feel better?

[splinten]

I'll feel better when we get you medical help.

[potentite]

Well of course I already patched it up. I'd probably be slipping in blood if I hadn't.
